Decorate a Donut

For Decorate a Donut day, patrons were invited to "Choose your own fun icing and sprinkles combination or turn your donut into a unicorn, monster, ladybug, or other creation! Donuts, decorating ideas, and decorating materials (sprinkles, eyeballs, cookie crumbs, pretzels, icing, other edible embellishments) provided."

Step 1: Get some donuts. I had originally only planned on getting 2 dozen, but the event page on Facebook blew up, so I bought 5 dozen.

Cupcake toppers work great on donuts, too. And it just so happened that I was able to get several things on clearance at Hobby Lobby, so I ended up with a pretty good haul.

This also turned out to be a great way to empty our snack cabinet. So, between shopping, what we already had, and a few donated items, here's what we ended up with:

--icing (I bought Funfetti tubs so it came with some extra sprinkles) in red, white, blue, and yellow

--gel icing tubes in black, white, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink

--sprinkles (quite the variety here, including leftovers from Christmas and Valentine's Day)

--cereal (generic Fruity Pebbles with marshmallows)

--candy eyes (small and large!)

--Goldfish (STILL trying to get rid of these)

--edible wafer paper cut outs (flowers and butterflies, was not expecting these)

--sugar mustaches, unicorn horns, mermaid tails, succulents (trendy cupcake toppers)

--crushed Oreos

--tiny marshmallows

--mini white KitKats

--Fruit Roll Ups

--m&ms

I divided the toppings (decorations, if you will) between the tables. To spread icing, we used popsicle sticks. I also printed out several ideas on how to decorate the donuts and placed on each table. I included Mermaid Donuts, Elsa Donuts, Patriotic Flag Donuts, Ghost Donuts, Kitty Cat Donuts, Unicorn Donuts, Narwhal Donuts, Ladybug Donuts, St Patrick's Rainbow Donuts, Monster Donuts, Donut Spiders, Cookie Monster Donuts, and just fun candy and icing-covered donut inspiration.

They turned out really cute!
