Waffle Cone Christmas Trees

I helped with the town's Gingerbread House Contest earlier this month, so this year I thought I'd do waffle cone Christmas trees at the library instead of the graham cracker "gingerbread" houses I've done in the past.

In addition to the waffle cones, I bought marshmallow bits, offbrand Fruity Pebbles, sprinkles, and m&ms. I thought it'd be easy to find canned green icing this time of year, but I was wrong. I bought white and some green food coloring.

It turns out that the Fruity Pebbles knock-off I bought from Walmart had marshmallows in them. So that worked out well. Happy little accident. I put each candy type into little paper bowls.

I divided the icing into two bowls and tinted it green. I set the tables with a waffle cone on a paper plate, candy bowls and sprinkles. The icing was placed between settings so it could be shared.

I also had leftover sprinkles from when we decorated Valentine's cookies back in February, so I go those out. The trees turned out really cute!

We had a few leftovers and I took them home to my nephews and niece. My sister-in-law got fancy with her textured icing.

Set up and clean up was definitely much, much easier than the gingerbread houses. It's a fun alternative, and we ended up having enough materials for guests to make two. The kids were also more interested in eating these than they were the gingerbread houses!
